From Construction & Demolition Recycling. The Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) has issued a final rule that revises 14 provisions in the recordkeeping, general industry, maritime and construction standards that the agency says may be “confusing, outdated or unnecessary.” The revisions are expected to increase understanding and compliance with the provisions, improve employee safety and health and save employers an estimated $6.1 million per year.

Twelve brief Case Studies on demolition incidents have been released by HSE which are reproduced below.The regulator is urging those involved in demolition projects to consider the scenarios and ask themselves if they could mitigate for these “common lapses in judgement or process”. If not, the HSE advice is to review their own processes with a particular focus on thorough planning, management and control of demolition and refurbishment work.

WASHINGTON, DC – The U.S. Department of Labor’s Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) is joining with occupational safety organizations for the 6th annual National Fall Prevention Safety Stand-Down, May 6-10, 2019. The week-long event will focus attention on preventing falls in construction, the leading cause of fatalities in the industry. The national stand-down encourages employers and workers to pause voluntarily during the workday for safety demonstrations, training in hazard recognition and fall prevention, and talks about hazards, protective methods, and the company’s safety policies, goals and expectations.

Powered industrial trucks, commonly called forklifts or lift trucks, are used in many industries, primarily to move materials. They can also be used to raise, lower, or remove large objects or a number of smaller objects on pallets or in boxes, crates, or other containers. Powered industrial trucks can either be ridden by the operator or controlled by a walking operator. Over-the-road haulage trucks and earth-moving equipment that has been modified to accept forks are not considered powered industrial trucks.

From Business & Legal Resources. OSHA will begin enforcing general industry requirements for engineering controls to limit worker beryllium dust exposures a year later, on March 10, 2020. At construction and shipyard workplaces, the agency is only enforcing the permissible exposure limit (PEL), which is 0.2 micrograms per cubic meter (µg/m3) of air averaged over 8 hours.

OSHA has issued a temporary enforcement policy for the crane operator evaluation requirements in the cranes and derricks in construction standard. The effective date for the standard’s evaluation and documentation requirements was Feb. 7, 2019.
