Construction's job gains showed more strength in June than in the previous month but the trends in the industry's unemployment rate varied, the federal Bureau of Labor Statistics has reported. The latest BLS monthly report on the nation's employment picture, released on July 5, showed that construction added 21,000 jobs in June, compared with a revised increase of 5,000 in May.

Construction employment increased by 21,000 jobs in June and by 224,000, or 3.2 percent, over the past 12 months, while the number of unemployed job seekers with construction experience fell, according to recent data released by the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics.

National nonresidential construction spending declined 0.9% in May but saw a 4.4% increase compared to the same time last year.According to an Associated Builders and Contractors (ABC) analysis of U.S. Census Bureau data, national nonresidential construction spending declined 0.9% in May, totaling $788.5 billion on a seasonally adjusted annualized basis and a 4.4% increase compared to the same time last year. While total public and private nonresidential spending declined 0.9% since April, public spending was up 11.2% and private spending was down 0.1% year over year.

The increase continues the double-digit swings that were reported during the previous two months, when a 16% hike for total construction starts in March was followed by a 15% decline in April.

The value of new construction starts in April fell 15% to a seasonally adjusted annual rate of $685.2 billion, pulling back following the 16% hike that was reported in March, according to Dodge Data & Analytics. Steep declines were registered by two of the three main construction sectors. Nonbuilding construction, which is comprised of public works and electric utilities/gas plants, plunged 31% from its elevated March amount which was lifted by the start of the $4.3 billion Calcasieu Pass liquefied natural gas (LNG) export terminal in Cameron LA.
