Falls from height are consistently one of the top causes for workplace injuries and deaths. The American Ladder Institute seeks to decrease these statistics and dedicates the month of March each year to promoting ladder safety during National Ladder Safety Month. During March 8-14, ALI devotes the week to sharing tips and resources to promote ladder safety at work.
Top Workplace Safety Tips
- Utilize ALI’s free Ladder Safety Training program for education on proper ladder selection, care and use of all ladder types.
- Set the ladder up on firm, level, dry ground. Use ladders with non-slip feet for any jobsites that may have excess or residual moisture.
- Maintain three points of contact while climbing and working on ladders. This means keeping either two feet and one hand or two hands and one foot on the ladder at all times. While working, you can maintain contact by bracing yourself against the ladder.
- Do not overreach on the ladder. Keep your center of gravity (or belt buckle) in between the center of the side rails of the ladder. If you need to work on something outside your reach, climb down the ladder and reposition it closer to that area to prevent overreaching.
- Access free resources on the National Ladder Safety Month website, like flyers, videos, infographics and more. Hang them up at the office or the jobsite to remind coworkers about ladder safety.
- Stay connected on social media channels by searching @LadderSafetyMonth and @AmericanLadder so ladder safety is top of mind year-round!
