Today, on America Recycles Day, EPA is proud to release the National Recycling Strategy, which is the first of a series of strategies to build a circular economy for all. The Strategy identifies the actions needed to address the major recycling challenges facing the nation and to create a stronger, more resilient, and cost-effective municipal solid waste recycling system.
During the next several months, EPA will work collaboratively with private and public stakeholders to develop a plan for implementing the National Recycling Strategy. EPA encourages communities across all levels of government, along with private and non-profit organizations, to help achieve the strategy’s ambitious goals.
The Strategy outlines EPA’s approach to addressing the U.S. recycling system’s biggest challenges, including reduced markets for materials, infrastructure that has not kept pace with a changing waste stream, confusion about what materials can be recycled, and varying methodologies to measure performance. The Strategy is also a step toward focusing on the climate impacts of materials and addressing improperly managed waste in overburdened communities.
Subsequent strategies in the series will focus on specific high-impact materials, such as plastics and food, as well as additional management pathways, such as reduction, reuse, and composting.
